Should the modem/router have it's wifi turned off when connected to Orbi mesh system?

I have just connected an Orbi AX4200 to my ISP provided modem/router to extend the wifi range. Netgear technical support suggested the Orbi be set to Access Point mode. I naively thought the Orbi would mirror the ISP modem's wifi SSID (and password) but I now have both routers providing different wifi signals.

Should I turn off the ISP modem's wifi and merely use the Orbi provided wifi? Is this the best configuration (ie avoid using bridge mode for the ISP modem)?

Thanks for any advice.
  • There's always plus/minuses.

If you leave the ISp router in router mode, you can always use it as backup wifi or even for those devices close to it to offload the main wifi.

But then you're restricted to the ISP's routers capabilities. If you like using armor/parental controls/etc, they're disabled in AP mode so you have to rely on the ISP's device.

  • You can turn off the providers wifi. Or you can set it with a separate ssid (as you have). Just make sure to have it on a different channel to prevent interference.
Or you could put the ISP modem/router in passthrough/modem only mode if it has that and leave the netgear in router mode.

Thank you. Does any of the options have an advantage over the others?
