Why do I need an account to configure my router?

Why in the absolute heck am I being told I need to have a NETGEAR account in order to access the management portal (192.168.1.1) for my router?  This is absolutely ridiculous to me.

On top of that, I can't even log in with a throwaway account that I created.  For over a day straight I get 'Something went wrong, please try again' over and over and over, even after restarting the router multiple times.

I honestly cannot think of a single reason for why I'd need to register an account in order to admin my own networking equipment.  Hoping someone can walk me through a way to completely disable these bs prompts, thanks.

    • Direct from fiber > ethernet converter, no modem.  Why is the 'default' configuration this bull**bleep** web registration process instead of being optional for people who don't manually configure?  I hate it.

  • It ended up eventually just automatically bypassing the registration / login after failing ('Something went wrong' spam) about 12 times.  I understand wanting to make the process more user-friendly for people who want to plug it in and have an app do everything, but they've made everything a lot more convoluted and unnecessarily obtuse, especially when the app / registration just doesn't work at all.  Thanks for the follow-up.
