adding a 5GHz wifi router
can a 5GHz wifi router be added onto a c3000 through the network connection?

It supports DHCP. If you have a spare port on the C3000, you should be good to go..
EDIT: Your new router would need to be configured in Access Point mode, prior to adding to the C3000.

I just got the c3000 and also just got comcast. I cut the cord with cable and am just streaming now. I'm getting above the rated speed on wire but the wifi is dropping with 2 wireless devices streaming. They don't lag much but I do see a delay in loading. I think I'm just going to return the modem and go for the c3700 since it boasts simultaneous dual band 2.4 and 5.0.

The c3700 is known to have issues with Comcast due to the firmware they push, I would invest in a seperate modem and router seem to have more flexability with device like that

I appreciate the feedback. I ended up returning the C3000 and purchasing an Arris SBG6700 AC. So far much more speed over wifi. I went from a marginal 12mbps up to 50+mbps!
