Battery Backup Failure - C7100V – Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Cable Modem Router With Battery PB022

I have a C7100V – Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi Cable Modem Router with battery backup Model PB022. I purchased the battery almost two years after I purchased the cable modem router. I mention this is only to emphasize that the battery is new and I have much experience using the router without the benefit of the battery backup. At this time the battery is less than six months old.

This week we had two brief power failures, each less than 10 minutes. In both instances, the cable modem router maintained power with assistance from the battery, but it lost internet connectivity and would not reconnect until I removed the battery and disconnected the cable modem router from power. I waited a minute or two and then reconnected power and the cable modem router was back online with full connectivity.

The problem seems to be that the presence of the battery is causing the cable modem router to lose internet connectivity when the main power supply becomes interrupted and it cannot reacquire connectivity until I remove the battery and restart the system.

I can recreate the problem easily when I simulate a power failure by merely disconnecting the unit from power. It restarts and performs perfectly as long as the battery is not installed. If the battery is installed, then no connectivity until I remove the battery and restart.

Any suggestions would be very much appreciated.

  • Yes it's been 5 years, but I wonder what version of firmware you were using with this modem?  I purchased a used C7100V and it had

V2.01.45 firmware.  Maybe this was a bug that was addressed by the time V2.01.45 came around?

Also, I'm wondering what happened to your voice service when the battery kicked in?  I notice that the PB022 battery description for the C7100V on pg 12 of the manual and reiterated at

    https://kb.netgear.com/000038533/How-do-I-install-the-optional-battery-in-my-C7100v-cable-modem-voice-router

only talk about how long it will maintain VOICE connectivity: "The battery can give you five hours of additional talk time and eight hours of idle time for voice service during a power outage."

Maybe that's a clue that it is only intended to maintain the telephone connection during a power outage and the modem is purposely being put to sleep to minimize power usage?

Be sure you have the proper model battery for the C7100v installed. You may have an incorrect model or the bettery you have is faulty.

You might want to check in to a external UPS system if you can't get the battery backup to work correctly.

The OP mentioned the battery part number PB022 and this is easily verified as the correct battery for the C7100V.
