The modem/router combo devices are only updateable by the ISP. Its not user updateable.
Its an issue with the app reporting it needs an update.
check what you have to this list.

According to that page, my device's firmware is up to date for my provider. So what do I need to do to the app to get it to work?

There's not.
You can use the browser to access/manage the C6300.
the app seems to get hung up on the firmware not updating and doesn't let you past it.
I have a feeling netgear is aware and working on it.
