Greetings, For all you tech savvy folks out there which I am not . . I have speeds of 600mbps when I plug directly into the router. However on any device such as laptop or phone, speed never gets ...

It has been an interesting exercise relative to all the variables when pushing the wifi limits.
My conclustion after trial and error . .
Use a comcast tier that will get you as close to optimum as possible.
I'm now going down one level to comcast blast that states that you will get up to 300 mbps. I get say 288 right next to the router using wifi. I'm fine witth that. In the second floor I still get 230 on a regular basis. I understand the loss due to distance and structures.
Comcast tech folks say that is the best I can expect and that the 600 mbps is useful for those people that plug direcly into their routher and don't use wifi.
I figure I have maxed out my wifi capabilities as of October 26, 2019.
However I will continue to monitor and when comcast upgrades their various tiers see if it actually increases the wifi speed.

I"m using for a laptop a E580 lenova, core i7. Phones are a mix of apple and android.
Nowhere do I get a speed greater than say 230 testing with speedtest.net
I understand that the wifi speed will not approach the hard wire speed. However I'm interested in how to get at least say half of the hardwire speed from the devices I have connected via wifi. If that is not possible then I'm wondering why higher speeds are offered and who can use them. Meaning if the higher speed tier I'm purchasing is not useful then I see no reason to not use a lower one.

I think you have some unrealistic expectations. Both my RAX200 and my Orbi RBK53 usually max out around 400-450 mbps on wireless AC. I can get faster with the RAX but its using a AX200 wireless AX chipset designed for ax. My AC devices won't get that fast.
And these aren't combo devices. they are router only. The addition of a modem in there places additional burden on the processor for processing so they aren't going to be as fast as a strictly routing device.
I've also ran the C7000 (for a couple months) and routinely ran the same speeds that you are.
If you want the best wireless speeds possible, the best bet is to have a modem seperate from your router.
The point of higher speeds is:
1. To say you have a 600mbps connection
2. To place as many devices as possible on hardwired connections (streaming devices, 4k tvs, gaming devices). this reduces the strain on the wireless network and frees up bandwidth for devices you can't hardwire
3. so you can stream multiple devices over wireless. You can have devices streaming over 5ghz and 2.4ghz.
For the most part, I rarely saturate my gigabit connection. I'm on comcast and have a 1tb monthly cap. If I was saturating it frequently, I'd go way over the cap. The point is to allow as many devices to stream/utilize it as possible so you don't have buffering/lag/poor performance.
