You can disable the DHCP server on the modem, set a IP address on the modem for what you use on your host router, i.e. 192.168.#.###
192.168.0.63 for example...
Has to be in same DHCP IP address range thats on the host router. Then connet the LAN cable from the host router to the LAN port on the modem. You can setup the wifi SSID and pw for your needs. Should work...

If you have only a modem, then you need a router with an Ethernet
WAN/Internet port.

Not really. If your (unspecified) "a new modem" is actually a modem
(and not a modem+router), then it has no "the DHCP server" to be
disabled. (Nor any other router-related features, including a wireless
interface.)If you want to configure your C6300 as a wireless access point, then

But that won't make it work as a router (with an external modem).
