Not sure what switches your using. Sounds like the ones you have are either faulty or you have bad cabling. Most any gateway modems only come with 4 LAN ports. Most modems you get support having a external LAN switch connected. From 5 ports all the way up to 48. Yours as well.
You might find a local computer shop to help out and see if they can help you get a proper Gb LAN switch connected.
Good Luck.

No.
What Mfr and model # switch are you using?
Try NG GS-105/108v4, D-Link DGS-105/108 and HP ProCurve 1400/1800 series switches.

If there is no solution, why would particular switches work? I don't understand. I tried two very old switches I had, but neither worked. I went to Office Depot and purchased a Netgear switch (don't recall the model - had four ports), but it didn't work. The I tried to use an old Netgear Prosafe that I had lying around and it worked for a week until it failed.

Be sure your LAN cables are of good quality. CAT6 is recommended.
ANY Gb LAN switch should work, unless you have a faulty unit, switch or bad cabling.
