Change SSID on N600 / C3700 no longer supported?

Hi,
After a year of amazing Cleveland Broadband fiber optics Internet service, I have moved and am now back to cable modem router-ville. I have a C3700 / N600 no longer supported via Nighthawk. Routerlogin.net doesn't recognize that WiFi is connected. With these avenues closed, what is the workaround to change the SSID (network display name) and default password on the C3700 / N600? It's perfectly good and I'm not willing to toss it in a landfill just because Netgear wants me to. Thank you for your help.

Factory reset the modem and setup from scratch with a wired PC connected...I would do this with out the ISP coax cable connected to the modem.

"recognize"?  Not a useful problem description.  It does not say what
you did.  It does not say what happened when you did it.  As usual,
showing actual actions (commands) with their actual results (error
messages, LED indicators, ...) can be more helpful than vague
    descriptions or interpretations.

Possibly relevant (but I can only guess):

You may need to open one of them.

I'd worry less about what (you might believe that) "Netgear wants",
and more about what you're doing, and what happens when you do it.
