CM1000 ethernet speed downgrades from gig to 100Mb

I believe I've resolved the issue - I took the modem to a friend who tinkers around with electronics, and he confirmed that most of the pins on the RJ45 jack were not soldered to the board from the factory. He soldered them all down, and ever since the port has worked without further issue.

After some random period of time (as short as 12 hours, as long as 6 days) I'll notice the Modem's ethernet light change from green to orange, and my internet only operates at 100 Mbps. Simply re-plugging the cable in usually fixes the issue, but I'm curious why it's happening in the first place, and if there's a way for me to fix it permanently. I've tried swapping out the ethernet cable (both are CAT 5e), and it still happens. No log lines are reported aside from the router re-connecting to the internet.
Are the ethernet ports on these known to go bad? I've noticed that it's super finicky, where if I plug it in wrong, the modem does not detect that it is plugged in at all.I've never had an issue. but maybe you have a sketchy port on the modem or on the router.
Or maybe even something got on the ethernet port connections thats causing the problem.
You could try powering off and unplugging the modem and router and cleaning the port connections with a little alcohol soaked into the tip of a q-tip. it wouldn't be the first time somethign was on the end of a cable when it got plugged in and it corroded or got the port fouled.
just make sure its fully dry before powering back on. And don't fully saturate the port. Just put the alcohol on the q-tip (not dripping) and gently clean it.

Unfortunately, I already tried swabbing it out as described with no change.
Yeah, I'm guessing the port's solder connection to the board on the modem is coming loose. Since I'm well out of warranty I took apart the modem and it looks like only 2-3 of the RJ45 port's pins are soldered in place, the rest are just stuck through the board. I've managed to get the port into a position where the modem has been stable at 1 gig all night, but I'm going to have an electronically inclined friend reflow the pins and see if that makes it a permanent fix.
I'll check in after that's done and let ya'll know if that fixes my issue. I'm not sure if this is information anyone would actually have, but if there's a part number for the RJ45 PCB connector the CM1000 uses, and/or a supplier that sells repair parts, I'd love to know so I can try to find a new port in case it is busted.

Hi there,
I have exactly the same problem, and suspected faulty RJ45 jack connections inside the CM1000 as you indicated your electronics friend fixed for you.
Do you know what type of driver your friend used to open the CM1000 case? It is not look like a regular hex or allen key and I'm hesitant to proceed without being sure so I don't damage the heads.
I couldn't find any documentation online regarding the type of screwdriver, and size, is required.
Can you, or someone else help.
Thanks, Mike.

Connect a wired PC directly to the modem and test speeds with out the router in the mix. Does it exhibit the same problem?
Have the ISP check the signal and line quality UP to the modem.
Be sure there are no coax cable line splitters in the between the modem and ISP service box.
Be sure your using good quality RG6 coax cable up to the modem.Try taking the modem to a local electronics repair shop.

There are 5 screws in total, 3 outside, 2 inside. The 3 outside (upper back, lower back, and underneath the stand) were taken out with a Torx T8 screwdriver. With those out you'll need to pull the case apart, and the front edge is held together by 4ish locking plastic tabs, so you'll need to pull apart pretty strongly, but it'll eventually come. Inside, the board is held to one side of the case by 2 regular phillips head screws. They look different than the other 3 so you don't need to worry about mixing them up.
Good luck!- mike300zxMay 04, 2020Aspirant
Thanks for your response Paul - that's exactly the information I was after.
I just checked my toolkit, and I had never noticed it before, but I have 2 T6 drivers, instead of a T6 & a T8! Just ordered a T8 online. I'll post back here when I get it and attempt the repair.
Cheers, Mike.
