I connected the modem directly to the computer and tried 192.168.100.1, no connect. Windows 7 says unrecognized network. So, eventually, I removed the new cm1000v2 and put the old Motorola back in and changed the Mac address back at xfinity. Everything worked fine again.
Note, I bought another new assistant modem, same result.
Also tried connecting to my w7 laptop, same result.
Spent 3 hours on phone with xfinity, no help, everything looks good from there end.
Deleted chrome cache, no help.
Xfinity won't help much more because it is not their modem. Uffffd!
Generally the user interface on Netgear cable modems uses the 192.168.100.1 address. Look at the name plate.
When you connect your computer direct to the modem, you want to turn off your computer, restart your modem and then restart your computer after the internet connection indicator on the modem is illuminated.
When you connect a router to a new modem, you have to do a full default reset and configure the router from scratch.

I spent 2 hours on the phone again with Netgear support(first line), not technical experts. Endless amounts of resets and power off/on cycles. Xfinity has the netgear modem setup and did much testing. I finally gave up for today. Decided to reconnect my router and put the old modem back so I can still get some work done. I was surprised to see everything worked without (!!!) reconfiguring xfinity back to the old modem. So I guess xfinity remembers all the modems you have configured. Seems nobody knows what the problem is, all they know is to try various combinations of power off/on, resets, and cable disconnects and connects.
I have tried connecting the modem directly to windows 7 desktop and laptop and windows 11 desktop and laptop.
If I understood better, I could probably diagnose by looking at ipconfig printout comparing the old and new modems.
I appreciate all ideas!

I think you are probably in error here. Xfinity only allows one modem to be registered to an account at a time. The modem MAC address is the registration reference.

Once you get a modem registered to your account and booted with the internet access indicator illuminated, connect an Ethernet cable to your turned off computer and boot the computer. Be patient, I have seen it take as long as 20 minutes for the Xfinity DHCP servers to assign an IP address to a direct connected computer. Especially the first time when the MAC address of the computer has not previously been assigned an IP address. Usually a computer is connected on the LAN side of the firewall and the Xfinity DHCP servers never see the MAC address.
