CM1100 troubleshooting xfinity
We bought a CM1100 cable modem at Costco this weekend. We are going to replace the Comcast Xfinity modem/router with this modem and the Netgear RBK50/RBS50. Today I tried to replace the existing rent...

That is hard to say after the info you've provided.
Can you post a screen shot of your connection page? it should show the channels connect, snr, connection strength, etc.
How about your logs as well?
When you log into your comcast account, is it showing as your device?
What firmware does the device show?
Can you connect directly to the modem with a computer and get good signal/service? are you able to browse online at all with this setup?
The questions above are good for help us troubleshoot. Doesn't mean they'll fix the problem. I've ran into, more than once, a crappy comcast technician. I'd try contacting them via phone and seeing if they can reprovision the device. IF they can reprovision it and you still have horrible service then you can either return it and replace or go through netgear support. I've used the cm1000 and the cm1100 without great success on comcast.

My laptop is directly connected to the modem and I am not able to get an internet connection, so I can't browse online at all. Even if I do get a stable green light on the online icon, and my laptop shows my ethernet connection as green, there is no internet. And after a few seconds the online icon goes off again and it starts blinking through the download, upload, and online icons.
Could it be a problem that we currently have tv+internet+voice but the new modem doesn't do voice? We never use that feature, but I don't know if the Comcast signal coming in would create problems.
Together with someone from the Comcast chat, we were able to register the Netgear device and she was able to see it. But we never got it online. Is there a better number to call than the general Comcast number, because their automated system drove me up the wall and got me nowhere. I have currently had them reset it back to the old modem/router combo, so we can watch tv and have internet at our house. I will try again soon before I go back to Costco to swap out the modem.

I agree with you, Comcast phone support sucks. And that's putting it mildly. I've wasted to much of my time with them and also think the chat option is the best bet when dealing with them. With that being said, sometimes it is necessary to use their phone support to get devices correctly provisioned. Both chat and phone support can have a bad representative who shouldn't be doing their job.
If you want internet and phone, you could look at the CM1150v which supports both. If you aren't looking for the voice option, the cm1100 should work. So long as comcast provisions it correctly.
Are you able to log into the modem when you reset it up? Address should be 192.168.100.1 (should).
If so, check out the questions I prior asked so I can help you.
I'd bet a reprovisioning would fix the issues as it frequently happens where the wrong file is sent from comcast.

Thanks, I will try that out (both calling and having them reprovision, and checking the local ip address in my browser). We don't need the voice service, so we should be fine with this modem. I just didn't know if this was part of the reason why it wouldn't stay online.
