Just bought a cm1150v. Activated easily with comcast when just connected directly to the Mac Pro. But when I introduced an Apple Extreme router everything stopped. Once in many reboots and cable disc...

The mistake that many make with the cm1150v is thinking that its a router.
Its not. Its a modem only with voice capability.
It does have 4x ethernet ports but the average user can ony use 1.
the reason it has 4 is some ISP's allow multiple public ip addresses (most don't allow this) as well as ports 1 & 2 can be used for wan port aggregation. The apple extreme doesn't.
So if you have more than 1 device plugged into it, thats you're issue.
It needs go to modem-----router (in router mode, not bridge/AP)-------devices.
unplug other devices from the modem, reboot the modem and the router, and then boot up the modem first. give it a couple minutes then plug the router into port 1 of it and boot up the router.

Thanks for the help. I think it is probably having the router in bridge mode that is the problem. When I have another couple of hours I will retry it.

ARRIS TG1682G? Which is a "gateway" (modem+router)? Which you've
now replaced with a simple modem?> [...] The Extreme router was in bridge mode. [...]
Presumably, that means that it was configured as a wireless access
point, which would make sense when it was connected to the ARRIS TG1682G
modem+router. Now, however, with a simple modem, you need a (NAT) router.

Yes. Or with any other _modem_ (without another router).

Then, visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model
number, and look for Documentation. Get the User Manual (at least).
Read.

router) is also important.
