Solved - despite the four green LEDs on the modem suggesting it was officialy conneceted, a character in the MAC address was incorrect. Why the MAC address authority allows "B" and "8" to coexist and be printed in capitals is beyond me.... Same issue with "0" and "O".

Connect your PC to LAN Port #1 of the modem and power it OFF for 1 minute then back on. Reboot your PC as well.
After the mode is online, check internet access. Besure to clear all web browser caches.
Try a different browser to test.
Do you can to netgear.com with out the activation page appearing?
