Chrome asking you for the log in information is the modems web page giving you a challenge to access the modems web page which is normal and by design. All newer modems have a log in page now. Look at the modems user manual for this information.
FYI, the CM700 is a modem only, no built in router. Some ISPs will not update users owned modems.
