Connecting a Samsung Smartthings WiFi ET-WV525 to a CM1200

So i connected the Netgear cm1200 to the network, had it provisioned by xfinity and it seems like it is working (although it is throttling at 90Mb/s). i have an old apple router and a samsung smartthings wifi hub that i set up as a mesh with 2x others around the house and am very happy with the performance of the little boxes.

however, i have tried to connect the smarthings directly and it does not see any internet activity if directly connected to the cm1200

The apple router is also connected to the cm1200 on port2 and sees the internet. if i connect the smartthings hub to the apple, all is happiness. but, of course i am not getting the fastest speeds. so does that mean that the netgear is in some state that i have "twiddle" to get it to recognize the hub?

or

can it recognize a smartthings wifi hub at all?

or

has someone had this experience and can let me know how they resolved it to connect the hub to the cm1200

thank you.

Will

The CM modem is just a modem, there is no built in router. The 4 ports on the back are for IP addresses given to the modem by the ISP only. Most home ISP services only give 1 IP address to cable modems so the other ports are not usable. Some ISPs will give additional IP addresses if they support it or users inquire about it.

So fore the most part, you'll need to connect a external wifi router to the back of the CM modem and connect up all your wifi and wired devices to this router. Review the online installation guide and user manual for help and information on connecting up wifi routers to the modem.

Netgear has set up a community forum specifically for the Cable Modem products. Most of the people who watch that forum are more likely to have experience with Cable modems:

Like FURRYe38 says, the cm1200 on xfinity can only have 1 device connected to it. Reason why is xfinity only allows 1 public IP address unless you pay for more or have a business class setup.

In terms of your speed, have you checked the cable on the cm1200? direct connect a pc/laptop directly to the modem and test it to see if its an issue of the modem, router/device.

i will connect just the samsung smartthings wifi hub to the netgear to see if that makes a difference and let you know what the result is.

i did connect the samsung hub to the netgear direct but it was on another port (not port1) while there were other connections to the other ports. on the netgear front panel it shows the port is acknowledging that there is something connected to it but displays orange, not green. i will disconnect everything except one device off port1 and see what happens. thx

when you swap things round, you might need to power off the modem for 2 minutes. then connect the device you want on the modem and power it on.
