Connecting modem and router
Because my house is old and has plaster walls my signal was low. I was advised to get a modem and a router that i could link. My upstairs has the modem and original wifi signal and it is eithernet cab...

No they are 2 separate networks you would need a mesh system like Orbi to do this.

What, exactly, are "the modem" and "my downstairs router"?
Assuming that "the modem" is a modem+(wireless)router, then why not
configure your "my downstairs router" as a wireless access point, and
use the same wireless credentials on both?

- CharliesTheManDec 03, 2017AspirantIve done the access points on the same network name and password. The only problem is your devices sometimes will grab onto one access point. Like of you connect upstairs and go downstairs, then they don't switch to the other one always perfectly so you'll have to toggle the Wi-Fi off and on like on the phone to connect to the nearest one.
Some devices transfer great and it's not a problem, but you'll just have to do some trial and error.
Make sure you're on the same frequency band and network SSID and password are the same. Make sure you know the IP address of each for when you need to log into the routers control panel or interface to make changes.
