Connecting modem to normal port not WAN port

It sounds like your cable modem has a built-in router. If true, then you should set up your N900 as an Access Point. There are two ways to do this.
- If your model has an AP Mode setting, then enable it. You would then connect the N900's WAN port to one of the cable modem's LAN port.
- If your model does not have an AP Mode setting, then disable the DHCP server, set the LAN port to use an IP address in the same subnet as the cable modem but not an address that could be allocated by the cable modem's DHCP server (or else you run the risk of an address conflict) and connect the N900's LAN port to one of the cable modem's LAN port.

i didn't have to change any settings. I wasn't patient enough. I unplugged the router, moved the modem connection from wan port to LAN port 4 and plugged it back in.
All is fine.
