direct connect between computer and cable modem
I am trying to connect my laptop directly to the Netgear CM1000 cable modem and have set a static IP of 192.168.100.2 with a gateway of the netgear IP address (and the auto-filled subnet mask, but it cannot connect. What am I doing wrong?

Don't set a static IP on the PC. Leave it at Auto Obtain.
Power OFF the modem for 30 seconds after you connect the PC to the WAN port. Then back ON. Give 2 minutes then check for internet access. PC will have a Public IP address. Check for internet access.
