Any of the combo devices aka the modem/router combo devices have their firmware controlled by the ISP. This is true for all manufacturers and not just Netgear.
If you want control of your firmware, you need to seperate out the modem and the router. The isp will still control the modem firmware but you'll be able to control your router's firmware.
