help with ethernet/wired settings on a mac / Netgear C3700

I'm having a hard time connecting my computer (MacBookPro, on latest software update) to the internet via the cable. I've restarted both the modem and computer. On my computer's "network" setting...

    even more bizarre: I've turned off WIFI, yet am able to access the internet, with both Ethernet and Network settings showing as failed...!!! ?????
