Were you not even _slightly_ tempted to reveal what this "an error
message" actually said?
> [...] Why is this happening?
It might be easier for the non-psychics in your audience to determine
that, if the text of that "an error message" were accessible to them.
> [...] as per the manual [...]
Look for "Factory Settings" (or "reset") in that "the manual"?

I'm sorry. I really didn't mean to be cryptic. There really was no message. The signin just kept repeating and I know it was connecting since it said "NETGEAR C7800". I did check the section of factory settings and it suggested using the paper clip in the reset hole. I did that and it did seem to reset and after the bootup, I tried the signin and got the same result. So I am stumped.

OK, this time after several attempts, I got a screen asking for the modem serial number. I entered it and then it asks me 2 security questions.....my first school and best friend's name. Where did it get these questions and how would a brand new machine know the answers? I answered as best I could (not having previously saved this information) and then got a message, "The information you entered does not match what is saved on the router. Please enter it again."
How could the router have any information saved about me? I just bought and installed the thing!!

OK, here is another bit of information I found. The MAC address shown on the bottom of the modem ends in 'C8'. When I notified my provider that I had a new modem/router, that was the MAC address I gave them. I've been doing a little searching and found the command 'arp -a' which yields all the items on my network and their IP and MAC addresses. The modem (at 192.168.0.1) shows the same MAC except for the last 2 digits are 'CA'. Could this be the problem? I will call Cox and see what they have in their system

If "admin" and "password" fail, then you might try another reset,
perhaps with all the data/signal cables disconnected. A proper reset
really should restore those default credentials.> [...] I got a screen asking for the modem serial number. [...]
That's the password recovery scheme. From what I've read, this was
very poorly implemented, including asking questions for which no correct
answers were ever supplied.> [...] How could the router have any information saved about me? [...]
It couldn't. Welcome to Netgear modem/router firmware quality.
If you get desperate, you might ask your ISP if then can flush its
brain and reload firmware afresh,

You wish. Every interface on the C7800 has its own MAC address.
That includes the cable/WAN interface, which is what interests your ISP
(and should be what's obvious on the label), and also the LAN Ethernet
interface, which is what a wired client device will see. Similarly, the
wireless interface may have its own MAC address. But if your ISP was
demanding the wrong one, then your connection to the ISP would be your
symptom. You should be able to get logged into C7800 using your browser
even if you're completely disconnected from your ISP.Which browser are you using (on which type or computer/device)? Have
you tried a different browser? (After an effective settings reset, of
course.)
