Lag when using built in router

I am experiencing intermittent lag issues while play games on PC. I have a wired connection so I'm not sure why this would be. Strange this is when I use an external router instead of the built in one, the lag goes away. Again, not actually using the router's wirelss, but for some reason the extra hop from the gateway to the router makes the problems go away. Any ideas?
