If you are trying to click the parental controls in the modem GUI that should just pop up a window to set up a parental control openDNS account. But the place that you control the parental controls is actually through the Genie app you will want to download that and then you should be able to set up the parental controls. Here is a link to the Netgear Genie app.

I am also having this issue. I have the Genie app on my Mac and my iPhone. Does not work. I get the "need to connec to the internet error". My online research sent me to OpenDNS. They said it is a firmware issue and I should try to use LPCManager v 1.0.4 (doesnt work either, get the internet connection error there too).
Personal thought, why promote a feature that does not work?
