Actual error message?

With the working wired connection, what is the IP address of the
connected device, and what is it using as a gateway/router address?
Does a command like "ping 192.168.0.1" do any better than using a web
browser? (It's not unheard of for a web server on a Netgear router to
die (more or less) spontaneously.)
One more thing to try for a cable modem(+router) would be
"192.168.100.1".

I gather so. These forums contain many complaints about ISPs which
won't push firmware to user-owned equipment, and about as many replies
from Netgear people who say that only an ISP can (and should) do it.
