You don't. Firmware isn't user updatable. Its part of the provisioning from the ISP.
So there isn't anything you can change with it. Its part of the docsis spec.
Are you having issues with it?

But if my ISP doesn't update it, and I can't update it, then updates never happen? What then?

Is there any way I can check to see what firmware I have on it at least?

then there aren't any more updates. Modems rarely get updates anyway because they don't really have any features. They aren't a router and don't have any traffic monitoring stand

If you can access the a web browser and the graphical user interface (GUI), the firmware version should show up there. But as plemans says, it is beyond your control:
Visit the support pages:
Support | NETGEAR
Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.
Check the section in the manual Log In to the Cable Modem
You didn't answer the question from plemans about any problems you might have. They aren't likely to be down to modem, especially its firmware, but you never know.
Just another user with time on their hands.

The issue I am trying to figure out is I have 1 gig though my service provider and I am only getting 500-750, through a wired connection. I had my ISP come out and check everything but they said it was all good. They will NOT do anything with my router or my modem because I don't rent the equipment from them. I checked the firmware on my router and it is up to date. My router is a TP Link AC4000 (wifi 5), so I wanted to check my modem firmware, thus the reason for this thread.
