I'm responding to my own question (!) but is the answer that the 5T HD is not compatible with the Netgear cable modem router? See:

Hello soltup1
Yes I believe that the C3000 can not see drives larger than 4tb.

Yes, I went out and bought a Seagate Backup Plus 4TB desktop external hard drive.
The Netgear Modem Router still does not see the external HD. Both my PC and my laptop see this 4T HD when I connect them directly to it, but they cannot see it through the wifi/router.
I've read all over the net about this and have come to the conclustion that this "feature" doesn't work on thsi Netgear device, or at the very least doesn't work reliably.
But if anyone else has a soltution or even a a reasonable troubleshooting procedure, I'd appreciate it.

Do I need to start a new thread saying that the cable modem wifi router is not working with a 4T Segate hard drive? Or will someone address the issue as it has evolved?
