network slows when using a network switch
a few weeks ago i was getting about 70 mbps on my internet. then i got a message from xfinity that i was going to start getting 100 mbps speed. well i checked my speed a few days later and i was getting from 70 plus down to like 60 mbps. i'm using a c3700 modem combo. so then i got a c7000 combo and hooked it up and i was getting slower speed. so i chatted with xfinity on both modems and they said it looked like i have a filter on my system and they could not find my modem. so i started to test and i find if i plug any cat cable into the back of the c3700 modem and the pc i get 112 mbps. but if i use any of the network switches it drops down to 60 mbps.
now i'm sitting next to the modem and if i plug in a 100 ft. cat cable i still get 112 mbps but if i pug in any length cat cable to a network switch it drops down to 60 or so mbps.
can anyone tell me why this is so? a few weeks ago it was 75 plu mbps with the switch connected to the pc. i even reset the modems and factory reset them and still it is the same if i pug intot he back of the modem it is 112 or so mbps but with any type of network switch it drops down to 60 with the c3700 and 40 with the c7000 modem. help me figure this one out. thanks
It was Killer Network Manager, I uninstalled it, reinstalled only the drivers and I am getting 60mbps down 6 mbps up.

Measured how, exactly?

Practically anything which you might do on its Ethernet side should have
no effect on what your ISP can do with your modem(+router).> [...] if i use any of the network switches [...]

no effect on what your ISP can do with your modem(+router). all i can say is what they told me. they wanted to reboot the modem and told me they could not see it on there system> [...] if i use any of the network switches [...]

switches" which you might be using, or how you connected them? well someone may have figured this out. i have a netgear 16 port 10.100 mb switch. 2 weeks or so ago i got 75 plus for mbps then this last week it is down to 60 and less mbps. if i connect the same cat5 cable up to the pc from the modem it gots to 112 plus mbps. but thru the switch it now is less. before they told me i was going to get over 100 mbps i did the same test ont he back of the modem and i got the 75 mbps from the back of the modem using the same cat5 cable that i plugged into the switch. this is a netgear switch not a hub. it is not managed and it say switch on it. thanks> can anyone tell me why this is so? Thanks for that model number. It really helped.
If you're trying to get speeds at or close to 100Mb/s, then you might
get better results from a gigabit-capable network switch.Note: "m" = milli = 1/1000. "M" = "mega" = 1000000.
What is the Mfr and model# of the external LAN switch?
Is this switch supporting of 100Mbps or 1000Mbps connection rates? If it's only 100Mbps, then this could be one problem. Most switches now days support 1000Mbps.
Try a different switch. Be sure it's 1000Mbps rated, non managed and non green ethernet featured.

can anyone tell me why this is so? a few weeks ago it was 75 plu mbps with the switch connected to the pc. i even reset the modems and factory reset them and still it is the same if i pug intot he back of the modem it is 112 or so mbps but with any type of network switch it drops down to 60 with the c3700 and 40 with the c7000 modem. help me figure this one out. thanksthanks. my netgear switch is a 10/100 switch and the model is fs116. i have been told this switch is not fast enough for the 112 mbps internet speed. i was getting 70 to maybe 75 mbps before i was told they upped my speed. so now i just reconnected back up to the c7000 modem and have a 10/100/1000 switch on the way. so when i get that new switch i will see if things improved. that might be also why my cameras are a bit sluggish when i look at them with my phone or the monitoring tablet by my pc. they show great on the monitor plugged into the dvr and the nvr just like watching tv. they are sluggish on the phone and tablet using the wifi. now that i have the c7000 modem/router that may get better. and installing a faster network switch may improve that more still.
some of my cameras also connect to remote switches but they may not be throttling them down the first unit to change will be the 16 port switch to the 10/100/1000 swithc and see how it goes. thanks for the help when i get it installed i will return and let everyone know if it is working better. thanks.
Ok thanks for confirming what you have. Yes, the 100Mbps switch is not fast enough to support anything over 100Mbps.
The newer 1000Mbps will resolve this.
