New to me Router

I got a new X6S for Christmas and was wondering if there’s a newer version of the router. Also how to use the stand alone router. I currently have a ac1750 nighthawk modem handling the internet.
My house is wired with Ethernet ports around the house so the internet connections are in my closet in a Onqio box not sure that’s spelled right. So essentially you plug the modem/router combo into it and then it powers all the ports and I get spotty WiFi coverage currently. My question pertaining to that is can I disable the WiFi on the ac1750 and plug the x6s up in my living room connected to an Ethernet port? Or do the modem and router have to be in the same location? What else could I use to supply internet besides a modem to transmit the internet throughout the house? Is there a combo that goes with the x6s?

  •    "X6S"? Is that an R7900P?  "AC1750" is a speed, not a model number.
For actual model numbers, look at the product labels.

       "newer" than what?  Why?

Define "stand alone router".  "nighthawk modem"?  Modem+router, or
    what?

    > [...] the modem/router combo [...]

That's your "nighthawk modem"?  Or something else?

    > [...] can I disable the WiFi on the ac1750 [...]

You could, but you wouldn't need to.

Two possibilities.  1) Configure "the modem/router combo" as a modem
only, and use the R7900P(?) as your (only) router.  This would seem to
be ill-suited to your apparent cable arrangement.  2) Configure the
R7900P(?) as a wireless access point:

Visit http://netgear.com/support , put in your (actual) model number,
and look for Documentation.  Get the User Manual.  Read.  Look for "Set
up the router as a WiFi access point".

    > [...] Or do the modem and router have to be in the same location?

       No.

Eh?  A modem of some kind is probably needed to get you connected to
your (unspecified) ISP.  You need a router to connect multiple devices
to the modem.  Those two functions could be combined in a single-unit
modem+router.  If you had separate modem and router units, then you
could separate them, and put the router in some central location (for
better wireless coverage), but you'd still need to run one cable between
the modem and the router, and a second cable between the router and your
(mystery) network switch at your distribution hub.

In any case, if you have an Ethernet cable which runs between that
central location and your main router/switch/distribution hub, then you
can add a wireless access point there.  That could be a suitably
    configured R7900P(?).

    > [...] Is there a combo that goes with the x6s?

I don't know what that means.

Netgear C6300-100NAS AC1750 (16x4) DOCSIS 3.0 WiFi Cable Modem Router Combo (C6300) That is my current modem/router. The NETGEAR Nighthawk X6S AC4000 Tri-band WiFi Router, Gigabit Ethernet, MU-MIMO, Compatible with Amazon Echo/Alexa (R8000P) I believe will not directly replace this so I am trying to figure out the best way to pair them, or if there’s a different option that will work better with the r8000p.

My internet runs through a structured networking panel in my bedroom closet. With Ethernet ports throughout the house. That’s why I asked if the modem is in the closet can the router be plugged into the Ethernet port in my living room. And still function correctly. I have cable internet btw.

Will using the router as an access point diminish the speed? Just trying to figure out the best setup to use with it.

      Thanks for the response.

"the speed" of _what_?  It depends.  Adding another gizmo to a chain
of gizmos seldom makes anything faster, but if you're talking about a
wireless device, then replacing the wireless access point in the C6300
with the (fancier) WAP in an R8000P might help.  But if your current
bottleneck is the wireless device (rather than the WAP), then a better
        WAP is unlikely to matter.

For a wired devce, I wouldn't expect to see much difference.

If you have all this equipment, then why not run the experiment(s)?
I'd trust reality over any free advice which you might find here.

One important thing is to configure this stuff so that you have one
router, not two.  See "Two possibilities", above.
