Nighthawk model c7100v does not handle gb speeds ?
Was told by Comcast that this router doesn't handle gigabit speeds without a firmware upgrade to docsis 3.1. Anyone know if the latest firmware makes this possible ?

There's no "upgrade the C7100v firmware" to docsis 3.1.
Docsis 3.1 is a harware change and not a firmware change.
You can buy a device with Docsis 3.1 capabilities like the C7800 that supports gigabit and has integrated router.

Thanks for the info. Thought that might be thr case. Guess a new modem/router is my next step.

That way you control the firmare on the router and can get the latest updates/upgrades. Plus if something goes wrong, its only 1 device that goes bad and you're not out a more expensive combo device.
but some prefer combo devices for the ease and integration

The CM1100 handles 1Gb services nicely if you wanna go with a modem only unit and then get yourself a external router. Besure if you go this route, ensure that the router you get supports 1Gb services. Some older routers don't. NGs R7800 and foward models do support 1Gb WAN to LAN thruput speeds.
