What solutions can you all offer to me? I originally purchased a router but then realized my mistake of not purchasing a modem, much to my dismay.
As microchip8 says, the firmware on your cable modem is in the hands of the ISP. Anyone there who tells you to contact Netgear doesn't understand how their own network operates.
The problem you have stumbled upon is why experienced users like to buy separate modems and routers.
The modem is not that complicated a device in comparison with routers. There isn't much to update on the modem but, but you can do plenty of things on a router, like adding new services and implementing security updates.
Buying a standalone router also offers a much bigger range of features than those modem/router combinations.
Should you feel the urge to get a grown up router the good news is that your modem/router can work as a modem only box. Just disable router mode.
