Having the same issue right now. Bought this thing so I can install my own DNS shield and I can't do any of that or use parental controls until the firmware is updated. Can't even use the Netgear app...
Updating the firmware on a customer owned modem is strictly at the option of the internet service provider (ISP).
Whatever the reason, technical or otherwise, if Cox says no then no is your answer as long as you are connected to their network.
