I thought this was an excellent idea, so I have an Xfinity gateway on the way. I will need to switch it to bridge mode so it will work as a modem only, as I have a router already in place, however, this will be a good test of the line signal quality assuming I can get Xfinity to perform an honest remote test of modem condition.
Please comment on how things go. and...... what is behind the decision to install a gateway rather than just a modem?

Xfinity would only supply a gateway. They would not send a simple modem. I've looked into how to boot it and switch it to bridge mode so it will function as a modem only.
