reset SSID and security key
Router 20 feet from PC (where cable enters dwelling); can bring router to PC but not PC to router; if I bring router to PC must a cable connection be maintained? Router had reset to factory default....

It should work. After you reset the router, you should be able to
connect to it wirelessly using the default credentials (SSID,
passphrase) on the label. When you change the wireless-network
credentials, I'd guess that you'll get disconnected, and you'd need to
reconnect using your new (non-default) credentials.

It's easier with a wired connection, because changing the
wireless-network credentials should not affect a wired connection.
