Roku disconnecting

Hello,
I have the nighthawk AC1900 model C7000 cable modem router. I'm connected to the 5Ghz on both my iPhone and my Roku box connected to my TV. I have a Roku mobile app on my phone that connects to the Roku device when they are both on the same network allowing my phone to function as a remote control. Every 10 minutes or so, the phone cannot discover the Roku on the network and disconnects even though the Roku continues to play movies and is connected fine. Roku support has been no help. They say as long as the Roku and phone are on same network it should work. I figured I would try this support room to see if someone has any tips. The Roku is showing "excellent" signal strength to the wifi. I disabled WMM to eliminate crackling/buffering sound when listening on headphones through the mobile app. Are there any other router admin settings I could adjust to get better performance on this? Any suggestions would be appreciated!!

    Hello Danjay

Is there any type of port forwarding that needs to be done for this app to work? Other than that I can not think what would be causing a issue if they are both on the same network.

I have not attempted any port forwarding for the Roku.  This website talks about opening ports for the Roku:

      https://forums.roku.com/viewtopic.php?t=20399

However, I usually thought that port forwarding was necessary when I was not getting any connection to the internet at all.  In this case, my Roku connection to the internet is fine.  The problem is that my phone (which is connected to the same network) will all of a sudden stop "discovering" the Roku player, and then the Roku app on the phone stops working momentarily.  I have to attempt "retrying" the connection a few times until it comes back.  This happens periodically throughout the course of watching a movie.  However, the movie never stops playing and the Roku seems to be connected to the internet just fine.  The only thing I could think of was that the Roku was buffering/losing connection for a split second, and that was enough for the phone to break its connection from the Roku entirely.  However, the wifi signal strength shows "excellent" for the Roku and I cannot confirm this is the case.

With my scenario, do you think that opening ports will help? In other words, does opening ports help in scenarios where the connection spotty, or is opening ports only applicable when there is no internet connection at all?  I've set the Roku IP address to static and that didn't seem to help.

        Hello DanJay

Typically opening ports allows devices see each other from outside the network I do not know how the app works if it should only look on the local network or if it goes out to the roku server and back so thats why I suggested to open the ports.

  • I cascaded a Linksys router LAN to LAN off my nighthawk. I connected the Roku to the Linksys wifi and the app works perfectly. When I switch the wifi connection back to the nighthawk directly, I have the same problems as before. This seems weird because when the app is working correctly from the Linksys, it's still passing through the nighthawk that it's cascaded from, right? I'll try opening ports, but was just curious if this new information gives any additional insights.
