What gets me is Comcast keeps emailing me recommending this as an upgrade but I don’t want to rent a modem.

If you rent from Comcast, it will have to be an Xfinity branded gateway. If you want a CM3000 and if they are available, you will have to purchase one from a vendor.
The email I received and the rep told me they will be available to rent but they don’t have them yet. She told me that I can buy one but they are not even released yet. I had the option to rent my purchased CM1000 from them but I bought it instead to save money.

Sounds to me like miscommunication from both sides.
