Put in a cable modem (ideally from the ISP) which can be configured as modem (no router, no NAT), with a Gigabit interface, unles the ISP is about to offer higher bandwidth soon and you need one with a Multi-Gig or multiple Gigabit Etherenet ports. The add a router to it - depending on the location to be covered this might be a single box WiFi router, or then a router, some switch (with PoE) and some PoE powered wireless access points.
And when it comes to VPN coverage in the products, please tell us exactly what for you need a VPN. To connect the the site in a secure way while away? To connect multiple sites and locations? To deploy a hide-my-a**-type VPN?

thansk i have the wifi modem now the c3700 unit so what else are you telling me? i have ip cameras and i'm getting so many different people telling me different things that now i'm confused. they tell me i need to get a vpn and they say the netgear has it built into the deviec. some say the routers some say the modems. so i now don't have a clue.
i'm thinking what they are telling me i need to get a vpn that hides me form everything and that i'm the only one that can see thru the vpn so i can check on my cameras when i'm not home.
at this point now i do not have any clue as to what to do. this can't be rocket sicence but it seems like but holes everyone has one and they do not mind telling me what i have to do to get this resolved. and it is just confusing. so that is why i'm asking netgear being i have the netgear modem the c3700 unit theat has wifi in it. thanks
