WNDR3700v4 seems messed up after firmware update

Ever since I have done the suggested firmware update, my wifi does not seem to be working right.  I checked with Charter Spectrum, and they say, all is good coming into house.  I did speak with NetGear tech support, and they said I had wrong firmware, though the firmware I had, was what NetGear suggested.  Before firmware update, I was on 5G all the time, and it was fast.  Now it stays on the 2.4 channel, and is slow.  I have had router for 5-6 years, should I replace it?

Thank you

The non-psychics in your audience have no idea which version you had,
to which version (of what) you updated, or what "NetGear suggested".

"I"?  Do _you_ have a wireless network connection, or are you talking
about some (unspecified) computer-like device?  Define "fast" and
"slow".  Generally, a 5GHz connection should be faster than a 2.4GHz
    connection.

Sure, if you want.  Otherwise, depending on what you did, you might
want to try installing some previous verion of the firmware, or
resetting and reconfiguring the router, or supplying some basic
information about what you're doing and what happens when you do it.
