Cannot Edit Names of Connected Devices

Modem/router: C6300v2

Firmware version: V1.03.06

We just got this modem router last week, an upgrade from an old Arris modem that is no longer supported + Netgear N750 router. On the old router, I was able to go through the web and edit the connected device names through the Access Control settings. This helped keep our devices straight, as we often used the Genie app to grant/deny connectivity to our son's devices. When I attempt to do the same thing with this router, I go into Access Control, select the radio box next to the device, and hit "EDIT" and the box to change the name doesn't appear, it immediately goes to "Updating Settings" and I cannot change the name. I've attempted to update the names of devices through the Nighthawk App, and there is no option to do it in there either.

For reference - I have tried on an iPhone, iPad, and an iMac and they all do the same thing.

Any suggestions / ideas / anything on how to remedy this? I've scoured the forums here and the internet and am not seeing anything related to this issue.

Which "genie" is that? This could be one of several things, the browser interface, a Windows or Mac program for a PC, or a mobile Android/iThing app. Netgear labels them all as genies. Which are you using?

Do you mean the web interface and the browser graphical user interface (GUI)?

If you haven't tried this already, visit the support pages:

    Support | NETGEAR

Feed in your model number and check the documentation for your hardware.

Check the section in the manual Control Access to the Internet

While many questions about routers are generic and could be answered anywhere, some things need specialist knowledge.

You might get more help, and find earlier questions and answers specific to your device, in the appropriate section for your hardware. That's probably here:

      Thanks for your response -

The “genie” I am referring to is the app, as stated in my OP. I know the new router isn’t compatible with that app any longer but it’s what I had been using for 6 years or so. The Nighthawk app is much less user friendly I feel like.

And yes, the web interface using a web browser and tapping into the router’s IP address.

I chatted with NG support after positing this and they couldn’t figure it out. It’s not a big deal, I know which MAC addresses are his but it’s just inconvenient. Such is life.

Unfortunately, now that Microsoft calls everything an "app", that could also describe the desktop genie. The way to differentiate between them is to use the "mobile" or "desktop" tag.

Be warned that it is wrapped up in a .rar file that you have to decompress.

The desktop app can be useful for the task that you have in mind. It lets you rename devices connected to the network.

Whether or not the name sticks is another matter. They do here but this seems to be a weak spot in Netgear's firmware.

Grab a copy while you can – Netgear is trying to kill.
