av200 powerline compatibility
We have the r6400 and some old powerline av200 extenders. We wanted to try to use them together to get the internet signal up to a far upstairs bedroom or our basement but when we follow the set up ...

Just one more update. When I connect the extender to my router, I mentioned I see a new wifi network pop up called "netgear" which I'm sure is the extender. Shorlty after, as I mentioned, I lose internet access on all of my devices. I tried connecting to the extender but can't connect to that network either. So, once I connect the extender to my router, I can't connect to my regular wifi network nor to the extender even though I can see both listed as choices on my laptop and on my phone....I just can't connect to either. Hope this helps

So, it is the wifi that goes tits up?
This is getting a bit confusing. Earlier you talked about all the internet dying.
we lose internet access on all devices
Now you say this:
Very shortly after connecting the extender to the router, I lose internet access on my laptop. I try to reconnect but I get a message on my laptop saying "cannot connect to this network".
That suggests that the plug's wifi is the issue. Not the entire internet connection.
The inability to connect does not mean that the internet is dead, just that the thing you are trying to connect has a problem.
On the router, when I connect the cable from the extender to one of the four ports in the router, that port flashes orange (rather than flashing white or solid white).
LAN ports are colour coded. The colour indicates the speed of the connection. Read the but in the manual LED and button descriptions:
>>> R6400 | Product | Support | NETGEAR <<<
Sounds like you might benefit from a bit of time reading the manuals.
There is also support for the XAVN2001v2 at the end of this link:
>>>XAVN2001v2 | Product | Support | NETGEAR<<<
- luellen1Nov 15, 2018AspirantI do lose internet access on all devices. Not only can I not connect the Wi-Fi on my laptop but I lose the internet connection on my desktop which is not Wi-Fi but is hardwired instead. Does that help any?
