My desktop computer and the router are located at opposite ends of the house. For your experiment, I used a 50 foot electrical power extension cord and plugged in the computer end Netgear adapter much closer to the second adapter located at the router, as you suggested. This indeed did raise my internet speed to the full speed of the new Verizon router. Unfortunately I cannot practically use the extension cord on a permanent basis, so this does not really solve my problem. Would a newer model Netgear power line adapter set be any better for my situation?

You may try to use another powerline adapter but let me set your expectation that you might get the same result due to the distance between the 2 adapters. The data runs through the circuit, the longer the distance the slower the connection.

Thanks for your reply. What I do not understand is that the distance between the adapters did not change when I installed the newer higher speed Verizon router. Yet, with the higher speed router, all other things remaining the same, the internet speed at my desktop computer actually decreased somewhat. It seems like the Netgear adapters somehow were more compatible with the older router operating at the slower speed than the new router at the higher speed. To me, this seems somewhat illogical.

Of course, the internet speed varies with the time of day and from day to day. But the following is a good average:
Before the change of Verizon router: Download 34 mbps, Upload 25 mbps
After the change to the higher speed Verizon router: Download 24 mbps, Upload 19 mbps
Let me emphasize that other than changing the router, no other changes were made in location, netgear adapters, etc. I also know that the new higher speed router is working as advertised as my WiFi speed (as measured by a laptop) increased from 20mbps to 58 mbps (download)
