Works now!
I tried a moving the adapter closer to the PLW1000, re-pairing by pressing the security button on both devices, but ultimately what worked was restoring the devices to factory settings. But it actually took a few tries to restore them to factory settings, because the various skinny objects I was using weren't actually pressing the button. A ballpoint pen does not work; a thumbtack does.Thanks!

The PLW1000 probably has a bad or no connection to the Powerline adapter at the other end. You should re-do the process to pair them together.

Thanks! I'll try that, but what does one do to pair them? The quick start guide just says to plug them in and wait for the light to turn on...
