Yes. That's annoying. But there isn't much that you can control, so there is very little need for a utility. Netgear is just being lazy. It seems to be pulling out of Powerline technology just as it did with DSL modems and ReadySHARE storage.
For anything you can control, you will find that these things are pretty well industry standard. So, if you want to do anything, track down the utility for a rival brand and use that. ZyXel used to fill the bill.
Netgear does have a useful utility that can show your Powerline devices. It is the Netgear desktop genie.
Netgear is trying to kill this useful utility, but for the time being you can find it here:

Be warned that the genie installation file is wrapped up in a RAR archive that you have to decompress.
