You should he able to use the standard "button presses" to marry the BT plugs to the Netgear one. But there is generic software out there that may see the different plugs. After all, they usually buy in their chipsets from one of the usual suspects.
Does BT supply anything?
Have you thought of visiting the BT Forum? There may be people there who know more about its hardware.

trying BT support now but been on wait for 20 minutes. Have collaped the entire system now at home so a bit miserable. fortunately the mac is attached to the router by ethernet cable!

BT support is a joke.
Use the forums where fellow users are often better informed than BT's Indian call centre.
