Pick a Plug Light Color Fluctuation

Hi,

I've see others have this same problem. I had the Powerline 1200 installed successfully to extend my ethernet network for a Tivo in a bedroom. It worked fine for months, then I moved it to another home. Following that, I re-set it up in the original location, and it seemed to be working fine.

But my Tivo was having network issues, which I attributed to the Powerline 1200. I noticed that the Pick A Plug light was green for awhile, then went red, then alternately green and red. I did a factory reset on both units, neither of which is plugged into a power strip—straight into a wall outlet. But since that reset, the pattern is continuing—ok for a bit, then going red, then green and red in succession.

One thing I did notice was that the Pick A Plug stayed green as long as I didn't plug the ethernet in the second Powerline device into the Tivo. Once I plugged in the ethernet cable, the light started alternating between red and green.

Does this have anything to do with the encryption key?

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Have you tried setting up the Tivo from scratch?

You have reconfigured the plugs after the move, maybe that needs tweaking too.

Thanks for the reply. I tried a full reset, then new encrpytion key sync. The Pick A Plug stays on for a long time, them reverts to red. Now it's back to green—just doesn't stay consistent. I can try to redo Tivo guided setup, but that opens the door to a whole range of new problems with Tivo and  tuning adaptor pairing. Guess it's time to call support, but I don't like paying 50 bucks per incident for an item that barely costs that.

I see that sort of behaviour. It seems that the plugs are responding to everything that is happening on the network.

To begin with they are handshaking with other plugs. When they get that right, they go green. Then when there is nothing to do, no devices attached, they go to sleep.

Exactly, but that's what you have to do. It is simply telling you that the problem is as likely as not be be in the hands of the clients rather than the Ethernet plugs.

Complaints about "smart" devices come up here often. In reality smart stuff is as often dumb as heck. Issues that they put down to Netgear hardware turn out to be nothing of the sort. It is a rubbish smart-TV or some other device. Wifi kit is especially prone to that nonsense. LAN is more forgiving.

The choice is yours. I'd go nowhere near that sort of service. They have less experience than fellow sufferers.
