Did Netgear sell you these plugs? I didn't know it did retail.
My guess is that you have been caught by a retailer's pricing strategy, and perhaps the passage of time. By all means rant at Netgear, but in these circumstances I usually take my business to a different retailer. Oh, and don't think that Amazon is the cheapest around. It rarely is.
By the way, you can get different Netgear powerline devices to work together. Even different speeds will do fine, although the network will run at the speed of the slower plugs.
You can even add devices from a different maker if they use the AV standard. (It is an industry thing.)
