security setup

I have a PowerLine wifi 1000 essentials edition plw1010

I have my extender connected to my router which has a security password for the router. Now I am trying to add security to the extender and can't understand the directions provided in the box the extender came in. Can't I use the same password as my existing wireless network uses? I try to connect to the extender network and it asks for a security key. If I can't use my existing key what am I supposed to use?
