Will a faster router improve powerline networking throughput?

I recently installed the bundled product including the XAV5101 and XAV5004. My goal here was to hopefully be able to stream fairly high bit rate HD videos from a PC on my network to a PS3. The product did provide substantial performance over wi-fi, but fell short of my expectations.

My house was built in 2004. The router and PS3 are about 50' if you run a cable across the floor somewhat as the crow flies, so the electrical wiring is going to be a bit longer of course. Reasonable situation I would think.

I noticed a big difference in performance running a cat5 Ethernet cable from my PS3 to the router vs. powerline networking. On a cat5 line I am able to stream 50-60 mbps video without any issues. My router is an older Netgear WNR1000 that only has 10/100 wired ports. Despite the LED indicators telling me that my network connection is 80mbps+ I found I could not stream video around the 50mbps mark without stuttering and quality problems.

I called Netgear tech support and explained this situation. They told me a faster router would improve the performance of the powerline network. Is that likely to be the outcome - in this situation where a direct hardwired connection is already outperforming powerline?

Thanks

  • Existing router should work fine but if actual speed gets over 100Mbps then Gigibit router would be good

Power line fluctuate all the time and indication of LED may not be good indication to take a fact.

If you really need solid speed CAT 5 is you want to use
