XAV5001 - transfers initially at 320Mb/s and then 90Mb/s???

Hi all - new to this forum. Picked up a pair of the XAV5001s a month ago and I've been using them. My system otherwise is full gigabit, with 2 high-speed NAS', and Cat6 throughout. I've read (and followed) the FAQs, live in a relatively modern apt. building, and I've been getting transfer speeds that average around 90 Mb/s. This isn't a huge deal for me as I'm only using the devices to connect 1 NAS to my other NAS for backup.

The other day, however, I noticed the strangest thing when transferring data. The first 1GB or so transfers over at approx 320Mb/s (verified by monitoring my NAS throughput speeds), and then it slows down to the above 90Mb/s or so for the rest of the transfer. First off, my understanding was that they're duplex units and so shouldn't be capable of >250Mb/s - is this true? Second, what could be happening here? Is there some sort of "saturation" that is occurring, of the adapters, or wiring, or something else? On one side I run router->adapter, and on the other I run adapter->gigabit switch->NAS, so I don't think anything else on my network could be an issue.

I've tried multiple different outlets, no power strips, etc. I just can't figure out why the units appear to be so fast initially (or if I'm misinterpreting this) and then they slow down?

Thanks

  • I have this exact same problem. 30 days ago I was at 290Mbps. I'm not at 85Mbps. Anyone else? Do I have any option other than to return it??
  • I wound up getting both adapters replaced. To my surprise, when I replaced my two existing modules (now running at 90Mbps) with the two new ones, the performance remained at 90Mbps!!

I know it’s easy to discount this as something being added to our power line, something installed that’s affecting performance, etc., but nothing in the house was changed. Even if it were the result of some other appliance getting added, I would have expected my performance to drop from 320 Mbps to 90Mbps somewhat immediately, and not 50Mbps per day across the month.

Overall, going over this 90Mbps link is fine for accessing my 6Mbps DSL connection, but I was hoping to get improved performance on server-file-copies or being able to perform PC Backups over the LAN. Not going to happen.

It would be nice if Netgear’s UI (that reports performance between the modules), had some advanced reporting to assist with troubleshooting this issue.

By the way: telephone support was an embarrassment for this case. Had to answer questions about Antivirus and whether I called my ISP – when all I was asking about was in-house connectivity performance.
