Off? is the radio indicator LED off? Unable to see SSID? No sign of it using wireless surveying utility such as inSSIDer or Acrylic or mobile app.? Also is your device dual band capable?

So, which old laptop might have a USB 3 port?

Tried on usb 2.0, 3.0. I have change back to 2.4 ghz on router. Now I have problem with my wifi always disconnecting. My notebook works fine with wifi, doesn't disconnect, but my PC with Netgear A6210 adapter disconnects every minute. In my UPC Ubee router settings wifi is set to 2.4 ghz , 20 mhz only, channel 11, mixed 802.11 b,g,n mode.
